The Montessori Philosophy was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, Italy’s first woman  medical doctor. Through observation in her own work with children, Dr. Montessori discovered the processes critical in the young child’s learning:  order, language, refinement of movement, and attention to detail. Through this work, Dr. Montessori developed the “prepared environment” to stimulate interest as well as to perfect the scenes and physical being. It was within this framework that she gave children the freedom to choose that which satisfies their own present needs. The child’s “absorbent mind” is then free to soak up both the physical and emotional environment. Dr. Montessori encouraged us as both “guides to life” (teachers) and as parents to “follow the child”, as each child will strive within himself to fulfill his potential and “construct the individual.”

“The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the period from birth to the age of six, for that is the time when intelligence itself is being formed.”    –Maria Montessori, 1889

West End Montessori School is committed to principles of equal educational opportunities without regard to race, color, sex, religion or national origin as provided by law and in accordance with our understanding of Montessori’s respect for childhood.
